Sanderson Farms Inc. sent a check for more than $1 million to Nash County and the Carolinas Gateway Partnership to restore funds used to fight a lengthy battle over a poultry plant the company originally announced more than two years ago.

The money will reimburse funds used for legal and consulting fees in the unsuccessful effort to launch the plant and the ensuing court fight with the city of Wilson and other local residents. Lawsuits and other efforts by opponents of the plant raised concerns about the effect the poultry processing and hatchery could have had on local water supplies, despite bringing 1,100 jobs to the area.

The company pulled the plug on moving forward with the plant in November and the reimbursement is being seen by Nash County officials as “just another example of what a great company Sanderson Farms and what an exemplary corporate citizen they would have been in Nash County,” Commissioner Robbie Davis said in a statement.

Sanderson Farms has yet to announce where it may be considering building a new poultry processing plant following the launch of its facility in Kinston, N.C., in early 2011. Late last year, company officials said new construction would remain on hold until market fundamentals improved.
