General Mills Inc., Marriott International Inc. and Au Bon Pain are joining more than 50 other companies in announcing plans to phase out the use of gestation stalls by pork suppliers.

Minneapolis-based General Mills announced today it will “favor pork suppliers that have actionable plans by 2017” to end their use of gestation stalls in their pork processing operations, following the leads of such companies as McDonald’s Corp., Oscar Mayer, Costco, Safeway and Kroger Co. Separately, Marriott International is setting a deadline of 2018 for all of its pork suppliers to stop using gestation stalls, while casual dining outlet Au Bon Pain is calling for a ban among its suppliers by 2017.

Bethesda, Md.-based Marriott and Boston-based Au Bon Pain are already requiring their food suppliers to deliver eggs produced by cage-free hens by 2015 and 2017, respectively. Marriott says it began a transition to eggs from cage-free hens in 2011 while 25 percent of Au Bon Pain’s food products currently contain eggs from cage-free hens.

The news prompted the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) to applaud their efforts. HSUS has been the most vocal opponent of the use of gestations stalls for sows.
