On March 19-20, CTP will host a public workshop entitled "Third Party Governance of Industry-Sponsored Tobacco Product Research." The purpose of the workshop is to discuss the recommendation made by a Institute of Medicine report which states that sponsors of Modified Risk Tobacco Product (MRTP) applications use independent third parties to undertake one or more key functions in tobacco product research. Also known as third party governance, FDA is considering this idea as it relates more generally to tobacco research.

The workshop will include three facilitated panels. In order to maximize the depth and breadth of the discussion, CTP is inviting individuals with a range of perspectives, thereby attempting to ensure diverse representation. We are seeking nominations for experts to participate in discussion on the following topics:
· What industry-sponsored tobacco product research should be subject to a third party governance model?
· How could a third party governance model for industry-sponsored tobacco product research be structured, and how would it function?
· What are the barriers to implementing third party governance of industry-sponsored tobacco product research, and what could be done to overcome these barriers?

More detailed questions to help shape the discussion will be provided in advance of the workshop.
Nomination of Panelists: If you are interested in serving as a panelist, please send your name, biographical sketch or CV, area of expertise, and the panel on which you are interested in serving to Workshop.CTPOS@fda.hhs.gov by January 31, 2013.

All nominations will be reviewed by CTP. Participants will be invited to be on one or more panels based on their expertise and availability. Given the breadth and depth of the issues, CTP requests that panel participants be present for both days of the workshop.
