2012 NC crop summary

Corn for Grain: Yield in 2012 was 117 bushels per acre, up 33 bushels per acre from 2011. Production totaled 95.9 million bushels, a 40% increase from last year. Harvested acres totaled 820,000 acres, up 5,000 acres from 2011. Cotton: Yield at a record 993 pounds per acre was up 61% from last year’s yield of 616 pounds. Production, at 1.2 million bales, was up 17% from last year’s production of 1.03 million. Harvested totaled 580,000 compared with 800,000 acres harvested in 2011.

Peanuts: Yield per acre at a record 4,100 pounds was up 500 pounds per acre from 2011. Production totaled 434.6 million pounds, up 49% from last year. Acres harvested in 2012 totaled 106,000 acres, up 25,000 acres from 2011. Soybeans: Yield averaged a record 39 bushels per acre, up 8 bushels per acre from last year. Production totaled 61.6 million bushels, up 49% from last year. Harvested acres, at 1.58 million, were up 220,000 acres from 2011.

Sweet Potatoes: North Carolina farmers harvested 62,000 acres of sweet potatoes in 2012, down 2,000 acres from 2011. Yield averaged 200 cwt. per acre, which matched the record high which was set in 2011. Production at 12.4 million cwt. was down 3% from last year’s record high of 12.8 million cwt.
Tobacco: North Carolina farmers harvested 166,100 acres of tobacco in 2012, up 2% from last year. Burley tobacco yield averaged 1,900 pounds per acre while Flue-Cured tobacco yield averaged 2,300 pounds per acre. Production was up 52% for flue-cured tobacco at 377.2 million pounds and up 12% for burley tobacco at 3.99 million pounds.
