More U.S. cattle marketed in December than expected

U.S. fed cattle marketed during December 2012 totaled 1.75 million, 2 percent below 2011, but well above the average market analysts’ expectation that marketings would fall by nearly 7 percent.

Feedlot owners placed about 1.66 million cattle on feed during December. This was 1 percent below 2011 and well below the average market analysts’ expectation that placements would increase by 4 percent, according to a pre-market survey by Dow Jones.

Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.2 million head on Jan. 1, 2013. This was down 6 percent from a year ago and below the average analysts’ expectation that the number of cattle on feed would fall by about 4.5 percent.

The inventory included 7.05 million steers and steer calves, down 3 percent from the previous year. This group accounted for 63 percent of the total inventory. Heifers and heifer calves accounted for 4.07 million head, down 9 percent from 2012.

During December, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 495,000. Placements at 600-699 pounds were 415,000. Placements at 700-799 pounds totaled 379,000, and placements at 800 pounds and greater were 375,000.

Other disappearance totaled 74,000 during December, down 19 percent from 2011.
