Russia will ban, effective Feb. 11, all imports of U.S. beef and pork because Washington could not assure that the products were free of the leanness-enhancing feed additive ractopamine, according to a report Wednesday by Bloomberg citing an email from Moscow's food safety authority.

Russia's Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance Service had threatened a ban of chilled U.S. beef and pork if it hadn't received word from Washington that the products were ractopamine-free. The U.S. reportedly was the only Russian meat supplier that hadn't made such a commitment, and this ban will apply to both chilled and frozen product, according to sources.

Moscow's move is the latest salvo in an ongoing dispute between the U.S. and Russia on the safety of ractopamine.
