U.S. Senator Kay Hagan today released the following statement after the Senate voted to avoid a default:

“We have an responsibility to pay the bills we’ve accrued as a country, which is why I joined a bipartisan group of Senators to ensure we do not default on those obligations, but this is not a substitute for the difficult work of deficit and debt reduction that must remain a bipartisan priority. As we move forward, I will continue working on a bipartisan basis to ensure we are reducing the deficit while making investments important to our economic growth.

“Congress must put aside the constant political brinksmanship and begin working together on a balanced, bipartisan plan to clean up our budget mess, provide certainty to our businesses, and prevent sequestration that would devastate our military from taking place.”
