USDA reported retail poultry and beef prices continued to climb in January while pork prices declined, according to the agency’s monthly Food Prices Indexes update.

January prices
The updated table showed poultry prices in January 2013 were up 5.6 percent from a year ago and up 0.6 percent from December 2012.

Beef and veal prices in January were 3.2 percent higher than a year ago, but 0.2 percent lower than during December.

Pork prices in January were down 2.6 percent from a year ago, but up 0.6 percent from December.
2013 projections

USDA left its projections for future food price gains in 2013 unchanged from last month.

The agency continued to forecast food at home prices — including prices of beef, veal, pork, poultry and other meats — would rise 3 percent to 4 percent in 2013 and food away from home prices would rise 2.5 percent to 3.5 percent this year.
