N.C. Pork Council report from the National Pork Industry Forum
Story Date: 3/18/2013

Pork producers from across the country, including about 20 from North Carolina, traveled to Orlando last week to conduct pork industry business during the annual meetings of the National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) and the National Pork Board (NPB).

During the event, NC pork producer RC Hunt wrapped up his NPPC presidency. RC was honored with a tribute video and a special resolution that recognized him for his impressive service and accomplishments during his presidential tenure.

In other NPPC news, Dr. Ron Prestage of South Carolina was elected to the post of vice president of NPPC.

Prestage, who has served on the NPPC board of directors for the past three years, is part of the family-owned and Clinton-based Prestage Farms which includes hogs, turkeys, cattle and cropland for hay. He's primarily responsible for the sows and turkeys on the farms in South Carolina and the Prestage swine operation in Mississippi.

Jan Archer of NC, a candidate for NPB, received a strong show of support from delegates as she was ranked number one among the Pork Board candidates seeking director seats. NPB candidate rankings from the delegates are sent to Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack. From this ranked list of eight candidates by the delegate body, the Secretary will appoint five directors to NPB. We expect announcement of these appointments in June of 2013.

Another highlight during Forum was the appearance of NC's Bo Stone during Friday's luncheon program. Bo, who owns and runs a diversified farm with his family in Robeson County, was recently named one of US Farmers and Rancher's "Faces of Farming & Ranching." Bo, along with fellow pork producer Chris Chinn of Missouri, is one of the four "faces" who will be representing farmers at programs and events where they will share their stories and experiences with consumers.

Thanks to all of the NPPC and NPB delegates who traveled to Orlando to represent NC pork producers at the 2013 Forum!
