Last February, Mexico confirmed the presence of avian flu at 12 of Bachoco’s poultry farms, a disease which now “officially under control,” per Enrique Martínez y Martínez, the Mexican Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Rural Development (Sagarpa).

"We’ve practically controlled the situation,” he said in a public announcement as reported by Proceso.com.mx. “Our reports show that as of March 12, 3.9 million birds, 2.2 million broilers, a million laying hens and 800,000 broiler breeders were slaughtered."

Mexico has slaughtered only a small percentage out of its total 140 million bird stock, Martínez added, and it “won’t affect our market.”

The Minister noted a stark difference to mid-2012 when Mexico slaughtered 22.3 million birds during the previous avian flu outbreak.

The Minister credits the controlled outbreak to the National Animal Health Emergency Program, recently launched in the main poultry producing Mexican regions.

The program will run for six months in approximately eight Mexican regions, according to Proceso.com.mx.
