Chinese government officials met Thursday in Denver with
U.S. beef and pork export industry leaders to discuss the potential for
increased trade between the two nations.

The Chinese team led by Ge Zhirong, counselor of the State
Council of China and former vice minister of China’s General Administration of
Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) told U.S. Meat Export
Federation (USMEF) officials their country is intent on increasing economic
ties in the next five years.

“We are here to enhance cooperation in promoting expansion
of trade and food safety between China and the United States,” Ge said in a
news release issued by USMEF.

Ge said AQSIQ’s oversight of the safety of imported and
exported foods will continue under newly elected president Xi Jinping.

USMEF President and CEO Phil Seng said the Chinese visit
led by an individual Ge Zhirong’s political stature was significant.

“[E]nhancing communication and understanding will go
along way toward building stronger ties between our nations so that we can
resolve outstanding issues and encourage trade that benefits producers and
consumers in China and the U.S. alike.”
