Bills introduced over the past two weeks in both the House of Representatives and Senate seek to permanently eliminate weekly maximums on proteins and grains served in USDA’s School Meals Program.

The bills’ provisions would greatly improve the opportunity for bone-in chicken to continue to be served in the program,” according to the National Chicken Council, in its weekly Washington Report.

The School Nutrition Flexibility Act (H.R. 1303) was referred to the Committee on Education and the Workforce. The Sensible School Lunch Act (S. 427) has been referred to the Senate Agriculture Committee.

At issue is the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act passed last July, setting maximums on proteins and grains that made it essentially impossible for bone-in chicken to continue to be used in the program, causing USDA to waive the limits for two years, according to the School Nutrition Association.
The bills would not alter overall calorie limits for school meal programs.
