March 2013 N.C. hog report

All hogs and pigs on North Carolina farms on March 1, 2013 totaled 8.9 million head, down 1% from December 1, 2012. Market hogs, at 8.03 million head, were up 4% from last year and down 1% from last quarter. Breeding stock totaled 870,000 head, up 1% from last year and up 1% from December 1, 2012.

The State’s pig crop during the December 2012 –February 2013 period totaled 4.323 million head, down 1% from the same period last year. These pigs were produced by 455,000 sows, a 3% increase from the same time last year.

Pigs saved per litter averaged 9.5, which is down from the 9.9 pigs saved during the same quarter last year. North Carolina producers intend to farrow 465,000 sows during the March–May 2013 quarter and 455,000 sows during the June–August 2013 quarters. North Carolina ranks 2nd nationally, behind Iowa, in the total number of hogs and pigs produced.
