Florida Fruit & Vegetable Association Statement: Senate immigration framework
Story Date: 4/18/2013

  Source: PRESS RELEASE, 4/17/13

I’m Mike Stuart of the Florida Fruit & Vegetable Association, which represents the vast majority of farmers who grow fresh produce in our state.

Along with the rest of the Agriculture Workforce Coalition, FFVA commends the senators who have worked to develop the strong bipartisan framework for immigration reform that was announced today.
This coalition was founded with the singular purpose of supporting a solution that will provide American farmers with a legal, stable workforce. Talk to farmers and they will tell you that this is the issue that keeps them awake at night. Without workers to count on, they simply can’t continue to provide Americans with nutritious, safe and abundant food.

The framework unveiled today is a significant step toward meeting agriculture’s objective of ensuring access to a reliable, skilled workforce now and into the future. It includes programs that will ensure farmers can continue to grow and harvest their crops. The key to the proposal’s strength lies in important bipartisan support from lawmakers and backing from agricultural employers and farmworker groups alike.

We especially want to thank the legislators who have worked so diligently these past several weeks to develop this outline for immigration reform: Senators Dianne Feinstein, Michael Bennett, Orrin Hatch, and Florida’s own Senator Marco Rubio. They have persevered to reach compromise on some tough issues. As you have already seen, along with the others, Senator Rubio has championed an approach that will accomplish the goal of reform while preserving American farmers’ ability to grow food. We look forward to continuing to work with them and other members of the Senate and House throughout the legislative process. Thank you.
