Statement from Tom Stenzel, United Fresh Produce Association CEO, on Senate immigration plan

Our organization represents producers and distributors of fresh fruits and vegetables across all 50 states. The need for a stable and reliable workforce in our industry is the greatest challenge we have today. Our growers face labor shortages where they simply cannot find workers of any kind to harvest crops when they’re ripe and ready. The result is acre upon acre of fruits and vegetables left in the fields, because, with fresh produce, growers have to harvest on Mother Nature’s schedule. We can’t wait several days hoping to find the necessary labor.

We know that many of our workers who harvest and pack our nation’s fruits and vegetables are undocumented, yet they are doing the hard work that most Americans will not, even in this economic climate.

We strongly support this agreement that is both bi-partisan politically, and reflects the needs and goals of both employers and workers. We are going to work hard in both the Senate and House to ensure that growers from all 50 states weigh in with their strong support for this legislation.
