A Europe-based research group has developed a biodegradable container made of flax and hemp specifically for poultry meat products, the Spanish news site Agencia EFE reports.

The Traysrenew food container, spearheaded by the Spanish company Termoformas, has been in works for approximately two years. The company recently unveiled the results at a ceremony held at the Technological Institute of Packaging, Transport and Logistics of Valencia, Spain.

The goal is to develop a sustainable solution for the market, said lead researcher Miriam Gallur in an interview with Agencia EFE.

Traysrenew has good mechanical and thermal properties which, according to Gallur, "can conserve packaged food products and delay the oxidation process.”

"The food container is 100 percent biodegradable and is made entirely from renewable sources, such as poly (lactic acid), flax and hemp," she added.

It was developed mostly for poultry meat products, Gallur said, due to its high customer demand and for being “healthy, low-cost and low in fat.”

The container can be also used for other types of meat with a maximum shelf life of 10 days.
Gallur noted that Traysrenew could be on the market within one to two years.
