USDA reported retail poultry prices rose 3.9 percent in March compared to a year ago, while beef and veal prices were up 2.7 percent and pork prices declined by 1.6 percent.

In the monthly update of its Food Prices Index, USDA also lowered its forecast for 2013 overall food price increases to a range of 2.5 percent to 3.5 percent, based on a decrease in its projected cost of food at home.

The agency still expects beef, veal, pork and poultry prices to all increase by 3 percent to 4 percent in 2013, but USDA expects other meats and fish and seafood prices to rise by just 2 percent to 3 percent.
In March, USDA estimated prices of food away from home rose by 2.3 percent compared to a year ago while food at home prices rose just 1 percent.

Compared to February, food away from home prices in March rose by 0.2 percent and food at home prices actually declined by 0.1 percent.
