Commercial hatcheries in the USDA's 19-state weekly program set 198 million eggs in incubators during the week ending April 27, 2013.

That figure represents a slight drop from the corresponding week last year.

Average hatchability, calculated by dividing chicks hatched during the week by eggs set three weeks earlier, was 84 percent.

Meanwhile, broiler growers in the 19-state weekly program placed 165 million chicks for meat production during the week ending April 27, 2013, down 1 percent from the comparable week last year.

Cumulative placements from December 30, 2012 through April 27, 2013 in the 19-state program are 2.78 billion, up slightly from the same period last year.
