Senate Judiciary Committee to continue consideration of immigration reform next week

On Tuesday, May 14, the Senate Judiciary Committee will continue consideration of the Border Security, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernization Act. Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) announced on Friday that the Committee will begin consideration of amendments relevant to the nonimmigrant visa provisions in Title IV of the bill. Tuesday’s markup will begin at 10 a.m., in Room G-50 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building.
“We made significant progress this week and have completed our work on the Border Security title. I look forward to the Committee continuing its work next week,” Leahy said. “After reviewing the remaining amendments that Members may wish to offer, and consulting with Ranking Member Grassley, I have decided the best path forward is to move next to Title IV of the bill.”
More than 300 amendments were filed to the bipartisan immigration bill, all of which can be viewed online. The Committee considered 33 of those amendments this week, adopting 21 of those proposals from members of both parties. Leahy said the Committee will again meet on Tuesday and Thursday of next week, and future days as needed to complete consideration of the bipartisan legislation before the Memorial Day recess.
