Dear Friends,
This week in Washington, I spent time introducing legislation regarding our veterans, healthy school lunches for our children, and young farmers. I also discussed the National Defense Authorization Act in the Armed Services Committee hearing and met with the Air Force Academy Admission’s staff.

Veterans
It is essential that we address the unacceptably large backlog of claims in order to get veterans the benefits they’ve earned faster and I am championing a number of bills that will do just that. This legislative package seeks to bolster VA’s current efforts to modernize and foster further innovation in order to get veterans’ claims and compensation settled faster. Some bills would have an immediate impact, some over the next two years, and others are designed to be long-term approaches to prevent future backlogs.

Healthier Meals for Kids
Students need healthy meals to be successful in the classroom, and we should always do everything we can to put them on the path to success. Helping our schools meet this challenge should be a priority for all. This week, I introduced bipartisan legislation to help schools prepare more nutritious meals for kids, legislation which has already received national recognition. This legislation seeks to help schools by addressing a lack of resources, equipment, and training of staff to meet the new requirements for nutrition standards for school meals.

Beginning Farmers
Agriculture is the backbone of our nation’s economy, but the average age of our nation’s farmer is 57 years old. It is the people in agriculture that produce our food and fiber, protect and enhance our natural resources, and contribute to the revitalization of our rural and urban communities. This week, I signed on as co-sponsor of the Beginning Farmer and Rancher Opportunity Act (BFROA) to address many of the barriers that can impede new agriculture entrepreneurs from starting a farming business.

National Defense Authorization Act
Each year, the House and Senate Armed Services Committees report their respective versions of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). These bills contain numerous provisions that affect military personnel, retirees, and their family members in North Carolina and around the world. This week the committee discussed Member priorities and the bill is expected to move through committee later this month.

Air Force Academy
As your Representative in the United States Congress, each year I have the privilege of nominating a limited number of people to four of the five service academies. This week, I met with the Director of the US Air Force Academy Admissions Department to discuss admissions date and resources to assist Members with the nomination process. If you or someone you know is interested in applying to one of our nation’s military academies, you can learn more here.

Sincerely,

U.S. Congressman Mike McIntyre
Representing the 7th District of North Carolina
