Egg sets, chick placements relatively flat

Commercial hatcheries set 202 million eggs in incubators during the week ended May 11, up 1 percent from the eggs set the corresponding week a year earlier.

Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 84 percent.

Broiler growers placed 165 million chicks for meat production during the week, down 1 percent from a year earlier.

Cumulative placements from Dec. 30, 2012, through May 11, 2013, were 3.11 billion, up slightly from the same period a year earlier.
