Selected North Carolina floriculture crop values up

The total 2012 wholesale value of floriculture crops for North Carolina producers with $10,000 or more in sales is estimated at $264.1 million, up 5% from 2011. North Carolina floriculture sales ranked 5th in the nation, behind California, Florida, Michigan, and Texas. The wholesale value of the selected floriculture crops surveyed with $100,000 or more sales totaled $254 million in 2012, up 13% from 2011.

BEDDING/GARDEN PLANTS accounted for $148.1 million of the overall sales, up 4% from the 2011 value. Potted bedding plants sales increased 20% in 2012, totaling $68.4 million. Flowering hanging baskets sales were up 4%, at $36.1 million. Flats of bedding plants totaled $43.7 million, down 14% from 2011.

POTTED FLOWERING PLANTS accounted for $33 million of the total wholesale value, down 8% from the 2011 value. Poinsettias sales at $17.6 million were generated from 4.4 million pots of all sizes. Potted florist chrysanthemum value of sales was up 59% in 2012 at $2.5 million from 546 thousand pots.

HERBACEOUS PERENNIAL PLANTS accounted for $43.6 million of the total value, up 5% from the 2011 value. Potted hardy/garden chrysanthemums were up 6% in 2012 with wholesale value of $22.5 million generated from 8.5 million pots of all sizes. Sales of other herbaceous perennials, including hostas, were up 4%, at $21.2 million.


CUT FLOWER PLANTS accounted for $6.8 million of the total value, up 70% from the 2011 value of $4 million.
The United States 2012 wholesale value of floriculture crops grown by operations with $10,000 or more of sales in the 15-State program is $4.1 billion for 2012, up 1% from the 2011 total. The number of producers for 2012, at 5,419, is down 6% in the 15 States compared with the 2011 count of 5,763. The number of producers with sales of $100,000 or more dropped 2% from 2,562 in 2011 to 2,505 in 2012.
