The N.C. Board of Agriculture will meet by conference call at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, to vote on a referendum request by the N.C. Peach Growers’ Society.
Members of the public can listen to the conference call in the Hall of Fame Room of the Agriculture Building, 2 W. Edenton St.
The Peach Growers’ Society is seeking approval to conduct a referendum among growers to see if they want to set up a self-assessment to support research and promotion. The annual assessment would vary from $100 to $350 per farm, based on the number of peach trees the grower has. The referendum would take place this summer and cover crop years 2013 through 2018.
The Board of Agriculture is a policymaking body that adopts regulations for many of the programs administered by the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Its 10 members are appointed by the governor. The commissioner of agriculture serves as chairman of the board.
