Farmers had planted 86 percent on the U.S. corn crop by May 26, just about making up ground on the five-year average of 90 percent planted by this time in the season in the 18 major corn producing states.

Last year, which was an unusually early planting season, 99 percent of the crop was planted, according to USDA’s weekly Crop Progress Report.

USDA reported 54 percent of the U.S. corn crop in the major producing states had emerged by May 26, compared to 19 percent a week ago and still lagging behind the 67 percent emerged by this time on average over the past five years.
