The month of May was a busy one. I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to spend the past week traveling throughout the Third District and hearing from my fellow Eastern North Carolinians on a number of different issues.

Working for Veterans and Military Personnel
Ensuring that both our veterans and active duty service members are provided the care they deserve continues to be one of my highest priorities. As you may know, many of the men and women who have fought to defend our freedom have waited over two years for the Department of Veterans Affairs to make a decision regarding their disability claims. This is unacceptable. To address this issue, late last month I signed a letter to President Barack Obama demanding that he take immediate action to end the VA claims backlog. It is imperative that we keep our promises to the individuals who have sacrificed so much for our country.

Our military communities are crucial to our national security and the health of our economy. I have been and will continue to be a strong advocate for the bases in Eastern North Carolina. President Obama's new budget includes another round of domestic base closures, a proposal that I strongly oppose. On May 28th, I joined my congressional colleagues in urging the Department of Defense to refrain from closing any military facilities in the United States before they have cut costs overseas. In our current budget situation, we must efficiently maximize our military readiness by prioritizing our bases here at home.

Creating Jobs and Growing the Economy
I believe that creating an environment that encourages – not prohibits – job creation is important to economic growth. To that end, last month I once again voted to repeal Obamacare in its entirety. Contrary to President Obama’s claims, implementation of the law will eliminate over one million jobs and burden small businesses with excessive taxes and regulations.

President Obama has taken even more jobs off the table by blocking the creation of the Keystone XL Pipeline. That’s why on May 22nd I voted in favor of legislation that would allow construction to begin on the pipeline without executive approval, creating thousands of American jobs and stimulating the economy.
