The N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ Secretary John E. Skvarla announced today the retirement of Chuck Wakild as director of the state Division of Water Quality and the appointment of Tom Reeder as acting director of DWQ. In addition, Reeder will continue to serve in his current role as the director of the state Division of Water Resources.

“Chuck’s vast knowledge of water quality engineering and regulations has served DENR and the state well,” Skvarla said. “I know that many inside and outside DENR will miss his expertise and direction.”

Wakild has worked for the department for more than two decades in a variety of leadership positions. He served as the deputy director of the air, water and groundwater programs; as regional supervisor; and as chief of the water quality section. Following a stint in the private sector, Wakild returned to DWQ in 2006. In 2007, he became the division's deputy director. He was named DWQ director on Jan. 1, 2012.

Reeder has been the director of the state Division of Water Resources for five years and has been with the department for 15, including seven years in DWQ.

“While this is a sizable expansion of his responsibilities, I am confident that Tom will lead both divisions well,” said Skvarla.

As part of the changes, DWQ Deputy Director Ted Bush will become director of Environmental Assistance and Customer Service for the Division of Environmental Assistance and Outreach. Reporting to Ombudsman Joe Harwood, Bush will lead DEAO’s sections. In addition to those responsibilities, he will be representing the secretary’s office on administrative and policy matters with Region IV of the Environmental Protection Agency and the EPA’s headquarters.
