Citing the impact on the local pork industy, an estimated 2,000 Thai pork producers planned a protest Monday urging the government to continue to ban imports of American pork, despite talks that the government may end a ban on U.S. pork.

Lower prices of imported pork may undercut domestic pork prices, Swine Raisers Association of Thailand leader Surachai Suthitham told the Xinhua news agency.

According to USDA’s monthly Outlook for U.S. Agricultural Trade report, pork exports last month were lowered $300 million to $5.0 billion on smaller volumes and lower prices mostly due to weaker Asian and Mexican demand and sanitary and phytosanitary restrictions in Russia.
