The Canadian government on Friday released a list of U.S. products against which it would impose tariffs in retaliation for Washington's latest iteration of country-of-origin labeling laws that it says descriminate against Canadian exports of livestock.

Ottawa is now closer to following through on a threat made since May 23, the date by which the World Trade Organization required the United States to reissue a COOL rule that complied with the body's international trade regulations.

“When the United States failed to comply by the May 23 deadline, we said we would pursue all options available. Today, we are also releasing a list of U.S. commodities for possible retaliation, to be published as soon as possible in the Canada Gazette, as a way to formally launch" the next phase of a dispute settlement process with the WTO, said Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway, and the Gerry Ritz, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and Minister for the Canadian Wheat Board, in a news release.

Included on the product list are:
live bovine animals;live swine;meat of bovine animals, fresh or chilled;meat of bovine animals, frozen;meat of swine, fresh, chilled or frozen; andcuts of offal, fresh or chilled, of spent fowl.

Canadian officials said they would not act on retaliatory measures until it receives authorization from the WTO.
