A strain of swine virus that was first identified in May and has been especially deadly in young pigs has now been diagnosed in 13 states, according to a Reuters report citing a veterinarian who is tracking the outbreak.

Known as Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus, the strain is genetically similar to a virus that killed more than a million piglets in China after it was diagnosed in 2010, though no direct link has been found to outbreaks in Asia and Europe, according to the report.

The number of pig deaths in the United States has not been quantified, and uncertainty about the potential impact on pork supplies later this year is creating concern in the industry, the article said.

The virus causes diarrhea and vomiting in pigs but does not affect people, and pork remains safe to eat.
