Smithfield Foods will close its Portsmouth, Va., plant on Aug. 16, eliminating the final 120 jobs that remained in the previously announced shutdown, according to Jeff Gough, senior vice president for human resources.

The company announced in 2011 its plans to shut down the facility, accounting for more than 400 jobs, and shift production of hot dogs and lunchmeats to its Kinston, N.C., plant.

Second shift at the Portsmouth plant was shut down earlier this year, Gough said.
Late last year Smithfield had projected it would finalize layoffs at the plant around March 2013.
