The New York Pork Producers and the National Pork Producers Council hailed a decision Monday by the New York Legislature to not approve legislation banning the use of gestation stalls for pregnant sows.

The legislation was supported by The Humane Society of the United States. NPPC said if passed the measure would have “forced local farmers to abandon such housing, resulting in financial damage and potentially ruining a safe and sustainable source of food for the state’s consumers.”

Over the past 10 years, HSUS has lobbied states to pass bans on gestation stall use. Nine states have passed such bills.

“Decisions about animal well-being and housing should be determined by those who understand the animals and work with them every day,” said New York pork producer John Lash in an NPPC news release on the decision.
