Pork prices decline, while beef and poultry rise in May

USDA reported retail pork prices declined by 0.2 percent in May compared to a year ago, while beef and veal prices were up 1.7 percent and poultry prices were up 5.6 percent.

Compared to April, pork prices in May were up 0.6 percent, beef and veal were up 0.5 percent and poultry prices were unchanged.

In the monthly update of its Food Prices Index, USDA estimated prices of food away from home in May rose by 2.3 percent compared to a year ago while overall food at home prices rose by 0.8 percent. Compared to April, food prices away from home in May were up 0.2 percent, while overall food prices at home declined by 0.3 percent.

During 2013, USDA expects pork prices to rise 1 percent to 2 percent and expects beef, veal and poultry prices to rise 3 percent to 4 percent.
