In the week ending July 7, just 6 percent of the U.S. corn crop in major producing states had hit the critical silking stage, up from 3 percent last week, but well behind the five-year average of 20 percent by this time of year and compared to last year’s unusually early 46 percent.

According to USDA’s weekly Crop Progress report, the agency rated 68 percent of the U.S. corn crop in top producing states in good or excellent condition, up from 67 percent a week ago and compared to just 40 percent at this time last year.

USDA rated just 8 percent of the U.S. corn crop in poor or very poor condition, unchanged from last week and compared to 30 percent at this time last year.
