Governor Pat McCrory addressed the Wells Fargo Agriculture Department Breakfast at the United Tobacco Company in Wilson on Wednesday, July 10.

"Farmers in North Carolina are the ultimate workers," said Governor McCrory. Food, fiber and forestry account for almost 1/5 of North Carolina’s income and employees currently. This equates to more than $750 billion dollars and nearly 650,000 jobs in North Carolina.

Estimates say the world will need to produce between 75 and 100% more food by the year 2050. These estimates represent a challenge for North Carolina, but also an opportunity for the state's agriculture and agribusiness sector. North Carolina can grow this industry through marketing, research and sound agricultural policy. Agriculture will continue to be the state's top industry and backbone for many years to come.
