The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has hired Rexford Cotten as regional agronomist for Bertie, Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Gates, Hertford, Pasquotank and Perquimans counties.
Cotten is particularly knowledgeable about coastal agriculture, having served his entire career in eastern Virginia in Isle of Wight and Surry counties and the city of Suffolk.
Regional agronomists are part of the Field Services Section of the NCDA&CS Agronomic Services Division. They provide advice on crop fertilization, nutrient management, lime needs, soil testing, plant tissue analysis, use of animal wastes and composts, nematode analysis, and testing of source water and nutrient solutions.
“We’re glad to have Rex join our staff,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “He comes to us with an impressive background of agricultural field experience. As a member of Cooperative Extension, he has advised growers in coastal Virginia for more than 30 years. He will be a valuable resource for growers seeking to optimize crop nutrients or manage plant-parasitic nematodes.”
Cotten is a native of Martin County. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in agricultural education from N.C. A&T State University. Cotten has been honored for his educational programs with awards from the Virginia Small Grains Producers Association, the Southeast Pork Association and the Virginia Pesticide Board.
