The surgeon who performed the hernia surgery on U.S. Rep. Howard Coble (R-NC) at a Washington, D.C., hospital the afternoon called it a success. Congressman Coble is resting comfortably tonight at George Washington University Hospital following surgery that came after he complained of severe stomach pains earlier this morning.

Rep. Coble’s Chief of Staff Ed McDonald said he was just informed by the doctor who performed the surgery that he repaired a right-side hernia that was causing the pain. The GW Hospital surgeon said he found no other concerns in the area and expected Congressman Coble to make a complete recovery.

It is expected that Coble, 82, will spend at least one night in the hospital, but the doctor said that given Congressman Coble’s age, they will wait until sometime tomorrow before a final discharge decision is reached.
