Sen. Richard burr update: After much hard work, the Senate passed the Bipartisan Student Loan Certainty Act on Wednesday of this week by a vote of 81-18. This bipartisan solution helps ensure access and affordability for all students seeking to improve their lives through higher education. I am very pleased that we were able to work together to come to an agreement that is fair, sustainable, and effective. This legislation will lower interest rates for 100% of students and families who have taken out, or will take out, a new federal student loan after July 1, 2013.

This week the Committee on Veterans’ Affairs passed key pieces of legislation aimed at providing those veterans who have selflessly given themselves to defend our freedoms the benefits and services they need and deserve. The different components of these pieces of legislation include extending eligibility for health care to an additional group of individuals who were exposed to contaminated water at Camp Lejeune; allowing more veterans to use their military training to obtain a license or credential needed for a civilian occupation; ending the unfair process that strips veterans and their families of their Second Amendment rights, and more.

Lastly, I know many of you are concerned about the implementation of the Affordable Care Act and the negative impacts this train-wreck of a law will have on your lives. I share your concerns and am committed to repealing and defunding the law in its entirety. That said, I do not feel that threatening to shut down the entire government until this law is defunded is the best strategy to achieve our shared goal.
