U.S. Poultry and Egg Association is launching a new research initiative focusing on two specific topics that will supplement its current research programs.

The Tucker, Ga.-based organization plans to spend an estimated $250,000 in the first year of the new program, which will delve into systemic salmonella infection in chickens and turkeys and the contamination of ground poultry products. The research will also examine animal well-being and care within the general poultry industry. The organization says the Board Research Initiative will issue requests for proposals later this year with a spring 2014 deadline to submit documentation.

The 66-year-old group said in a statement that it remains committed to funding research that addresses specific needs of the industry through its research, education, communication and technical assistance programs.
