For many, farmers markets are synonymous with summer. But the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is reminding consumers that many of the state’s more than 200 farmers markets are open late into the fall, with some open year-round.

“The four state-operated farmers markets in Asheville, Charlotte, Colfax and Raleigh are open all year, as are many farmers markets operated by counties, cities and towns,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “This has a lot to do with the diversity of crops grown in North Carolina, as well as the range of climates across the state that allows for extended growing seasons for several crops.”

Visitors should be able to find an abundance of N.C. apples at their local farmers markets through the winter. In addition, they will find a good selection of tomatoes, corn, squash, sweet potatoes and a variety of greens into October. Markets are also a great source for Halloween and fall decorations, including pumpkins, gourds, decorative corn and other items.

“No matter where you live in the state, you should be able to find a local farmers market in your area,” Troxler said. “Most counties have at least one or two markets that are open throughout the fall.”

Consumers looking to find a farmers market in their area are encouraged to use the department’s N.C. Farm Fresh directory. The guide provides information on product availability, location and hours of operations for farmers markets, pick-your-own farms and roadside stands across the state. Users are able to search by county and crop. The directory is available at www.ncfarmfresh.com.
