The European Commission but won’t ask for country-of-origin labeling from birth on all EU meat products, as it currently does for beef only, according to the European Voice, which obtained a leaked draft report.

The draft proposal will instead require labeling only for the last phase of rearing and the country of slaughter.

Consumer advocacy groups pushed for full labeling following the continent’s horsmeat scandal earlier this year, but meat producers cited the expense and complication that would arise from full labeling from birth.

The commission is slated to present its report next week.
