Following up on a pledge he made during the recent federal government shutdown, U.S. Rep. Howard Coble (R-NC) announced today which charities in the Sixth District would be receiving his pay that was held during the 16-day standoff. Congressman Coble had requested that his paycheck be held until the budget impasse among the House, Senate and President Obama was resolved. “Congress finally reached an agreement with the White House on a short-term federal budget,” Rep. Coble said, “and the government reopened on October 17. I had asked that my pay be withheld until the stalemate was resolved, and at the time I also announced that once I received my pay, I would donate whatever I earned during the shutdown to charity, no matter how long that was.”
Rep. Coble stated that he and his staff received their full paychecks at the end of October. “My portion of pay during the 16-day shutdown came to $5,150.40, so I have decided to donate $5,200 to seven charities located throughout the Sixth District. The more difficult decision was which charities to select from among so many outstanding organizations located across the district.”
Congressman Coble announced that he would be mailing personal checks this week to the following charitable organizations and institutions: Alamance Presbyterian Church Greensboro, NC $1,000 MARC – Museum & Archives of Rockingham County Wentworth, NC $1,000 University of North Carolina at Greensboro Congressional Papers Project Greensboro, NC $1,000 Elkin Rescue Squad c/o WIFM-FM Radio Elkin, NC $600 Residential Treatment Services, Inc.
