Shortly after the New Year, Murphy-Brown LLC, the production arm of Smithfield Foods, sent letters to their contractors encouraging them to convert their sow barns to communal housing, moving away from gestation crates. Tommy Porter, a Cabarrus County, NC is one such contractor, and has resisted converting to communal housing because science doesn’t back up the practice.
