The USDA’s Risk Management Agency (RMA) recently announced coverage for machine-harvested pickling cucumbers under the Federal Crop Insurance program. Producers interested in buying a policy must do so by the March 15, 2014, sales closing date.

Machine-harvested pickling cucumber insurance is now available in Kent and Sussex counties in Delaware; Caroline, Dorchester, Kent and Talbot counties in Maryland; and in Bertie, Gates, Hertford and Northampton counties in North Carolina.

Yield protection is offered through this actual production history (APH) insurance plan. Producers can choose Catastrophic Risk Protection (CAT) coverage or buy-up coverage ranging from 50 to 75 percent. Crop insurance protects producers against such events as adverse weather conditions, insect damage, plant disease, and wildlife damage.

Crop insurance is sold and delivered solely through private crop insurance agents. Contact a local crop insurance agent for more information about the program. A list of crop insurance agents is available at all USDA Service Centers or on the RMA website at: www.rma.usda.gov/tools/agents/.
