Russia’s largest meat processors have asked President Vladimir Putin in an open letter to lift restrictions placed recently on imports of pork from the European Union, according to a report by Globalmeatnews.com.

Local pork producers cannot meet the raw material needs of Russia’s domestic processing plants, the article cited the letter as saying. It also said supplies are covering just a third of the required volume, causing prices for raw materials to spike by almost 70 percent in the past two weeks.

Among those signing the letter were Igor Yefremov, chairman of Dubki, one of Russia’s largest sausage producers, the article said.
