The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has posted Lifecycle Assessment Guidelines developed by its Livestock Environmental Assessment Performance (LEAP) Partnership that aim to harmonize environmental performance assessment and livestock and poultry supply chain monitoring on a global scale.

The three draft guidelines that have been submitted to public review mainly target:

•      Livestock producers that wish to evaluate the performance of their production systems.
•      Supply chain partners such as processors (feed producers, slaughterhouses) seeking for a better understanding of the environmental performance of products purchased or used in their production process.
•      Policy makers interested in developing sustainability accounting systems and reporting specifications for livestock supply chains.

Public comments will be accepted on the draft guidelines through July 31.
The International Poultry Council has been involved since LEAP was formed and helped develop the guidelines for poultry.
