McIntyre votes against budget that would hurt seniors, farmers, and college students

U.S. Congressman Mike McIntyre (NC-7)released the following statement expressing his disagreement with and vote against the Republican Fiscal Year 2015 Budget Resolution.
“A bi-partisan approach to the budget is necessary in order to combat the federal debt, which is well over $17 trillion, and to put our country back on a path to fiscally responsible prosperity. However, the budget that the majority has proposed will hurt agriculture, deny opportunities for college education, and hinder our economic growth by cutting funds that assist American seniors and educate the next generation. Some of the worst impacts of this budget include:
• Ending Medicare’s guarantee of health security and shifting increasing costs onto seniors and the disabled;
• Eliminating an additional $23 billion in farm and crop insurance programs;
• Making college unaffordable for many Americans by cutting Pell Grants by between $80 billion and $145 billion;
• Cutting $735 billion by block granting the Medicaid program and cutting over $125 billion over the next decade from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP);
• Slashing transportation investments by $52 billion and by $173 billion over the decade, which would lead to the reduction of critical transportation infrastructure in North Carolina.
“Our federal budget represents important decisions that we must make to address our nation’s skyrocketing federal debt. We must balance our budget in a responsible way, something that North Carolina families, communities, and businesses do every day! That’s why I have consistently co-sponsored legislation which would create a Balanced Budget Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and require the federal government to balance its budget, just like most states are required to do.
“We need a workable, bi-partisan solution in order to give our country a stable financial future. I voted against this drastic budget because I will not support any budget plan that breaks our promises to our seniors, cuts programs that assist the vulnerable, hurts agriculture, and disadvantages our future generations.
“I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to address the challenges of this country and move toward a balanced budget!”
