Source: USDA'S NASS NC FIELD OFFICE, 4/27/14 There were 4.8 days suitable for field work for the week ending April 27th compared to 3.4 for the week ending April 20th. Statewide topsoil moisture levels were rated at 5% short, 72% adequate and 23% surplus. Subsoil moisture levels were rated at 5% short, 73% adequate and 22% surplus. Wheat condition was rated 1% very poor, 6% poor, 23% fair, 57% good and 13% excellent which is fairly similar to the conditions for barley and oats. Wheat headed was reported at 20% for the week. Corn progress was reported at 60% planted and 32% emerged and Flue-cured tobacco was reported at 20% transplanted. The state recorded slightly below normal temperatures with the average temperatures ranging from 55 to 65 degrees. Wet conditions in some areas delayed field work.
