It’s strawberry season across North Carolina, and fans of the red berry are encouraged to celebrate it during Strawberry Day at the Robert G. Shaw Piedmont Triad Farmers Market in Colfax on Friday, May 2.

The annual event will include free samples of strawberries and strawberry ice cream, a dessert recipe contest and a visit from Suzy the Strawberry. There also will be plenty of strawberries and strawberry products available for purchase from market vendors. Strawberry Day will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Farmers Building.
The dessert contest will take place before the Strawberry Day celebration. Winners will be announced and prizes will be awarded during the event. Desserts can be dropped off between 8 and 10 a.m. at the market office at 2914 Sandy Ridge Road. Judging will start at 10 a.m., and media are invited to attend.

Dishes will be judged on flavor, appearance, quality and creative use of strawberries. Recipes should include at least two cups of N.C. strawberries, and strawberries must be a main ingredient. All entries must be in disposable containers and include the complete recipe with cooking instructions, along with contestant’s name, address and telephone number. Prize money will be awarded for the top three desserts: $100 for first place, $75 for second and $50 for third.

North Carolina is the fourth-largest producer of strawberries in the nation. The state’s strawberry season runs through June. Strawberry growers are expecting an outstanding crop despite challenging winter weather earlier this year.
