NC leaders tour energy project on hog farm

Earlier this month, Gov. Pat McCrory, Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler and Department of Environment and Natural Resources Secretary John Svarla toured a swine waste-to-electricity project in Magnolia, NC.
The project is actually comprised of ten separate but adjacent finishing farms owned by Murphy Family Ventures (MFV). Digesters onsite utilize biogas from nearly 74,000 finishing hogs. That's enough methane to produce an estimated 10,200,000 kilowatt hours of electricity a year and power upwards of 738 North Carolina homes!
The opportunity to generate electricity from swine waste is only possible because of North Carolina's renewable energy law. The MFV project in Magnolia is one of six swine waste-to-electricity projects in NC and there are many more on the way.
