Corn planting progresses, but still lags

In the week ending May 5, USDA reported 29 percent of the U.S. corn crop in major producing states had been planted, well ahead of the just 11 percent planted by this time last year, but lagging the five-year average of 42 percent by this time of year. A week ago, 19 percent of the crop was planted.


According to USDA’s weekly Crop Progress report, 7 percent of the corn crop had emerged, up from 3 percent last week and 3 percent by this time last year but behind the 5-year average of 13 percent emerged by now.


USDA reported 5 percent of the U.S. soybean crop planted in major producing states, up from 3 percent planted a week ago and 2 percent by this time last year, but behind the five-year average of 11 percent planted by now.
